"Spartanburg's newest cultural gem"
-Carolina Curtain Call
Who We Are
Scrappy Shakespeare is a company of theatre artists, friends, and weirdos who, have mercy on their souls, love staging Shakespeare's plays. We come from different areas of the country, but we share both a love of Spartanburg and testing our theatrical limits.
Having worked together on a variety of irreverent, high-energy, and ridiculous projects we've coined the only phrase that can truly describe our collective creative mind: the big ol' stupid brain. Out of this big ol', dumb ol' brain comes fast-paced exploration, a penchant to say yes to new ideas, and an excitement for finding what is new, captivating, and fun.
And, despite all of our antics, we are highly trained, invested theatre artists. We believe in the vitality and accessibility of theatre and that all we really need for a great production are talented and giving artists, a boatload of scrappy creativity, and an intimate connection with our audience.
What We Do
We do Shakespeare! DUH!
But not like you might expect. Our work is raucous and immediate. We ask the question, "how can a theatrical performance be more like a rock concert?" Not just by adding music but by seeking to create the celebratory communal environment found at a good live show.
We create productions that strip theatrical storytelling down to its essentials: a group of multi-talented storytellers and an audience. We believe theatre's advantages are its immediacy and the collective act of imagination needed to create a new world. Theatre is participatory. And Shakespeare's plays, ones in which the characters interact directly with the audience, create a rich environment for this kind of storytelling.
We find this in our productions through openness to the most creative ideas and a willingness to serve the story and its implications in the world as it is now.
